Liberty Institute fights to restore religious liberty pursuant to the principles of America’s founders—that religious freedom does not mean confining religious expression to church or home, but that true religious liberty consists of recognizing individuals’ God-given right to follow their conscience and to live and act according to their faith in every area of life.
Our nation was founded on the premise that rights come from God—in fact, the Declaration of Independence references God four times, including in the following famous passage:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; that to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”
America’s founders guaranteed the right to religious liberty in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, prohibiting the government both from forcing its citizens to follow a particular religious belief and from restraining the exercise of religion:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
Yet today, wealthy institutions are spending enormous sums of money per year to destroy your religious liberty and scrub references to God from the public square. Major proponents of religious discrimination and hostility include:

•Freedom From Religion Foundation
•Other Agencies and Educational Institutions
The threat is grave. If government prohibits the right to freely acknowledge God, then government replaces God and can remove any “rights” at its will. Liberty Institute’s vision is to see religious liberty respected and flourishing in America. To accomplish this goal, we have identified four major areas of emphasis where religious freedom is under serious attack, and we have dedicated ourselves to defending religious liberty in those areas: for our churches, in our schools, inside the military, and throughout the public arena.
- For Our Churches — This area of emphasis includes churches, religious ministries, and religious schools and institutions of all faiths. Liberty Institute works to ensure that churches and other religious ministries of all faiths can operate and act according to their beliefs free from discrimination and unlawful government interference.
- For Our Schools — This category includes students, teachers, parents and others discriminated against for freely exercising their religious beliefs. Liberty Institute’s goal is to ensure that religious liberty and religious expression in the school is valued and protected, not attacked.
- Inside the Military — Liberty Institute added this category—our newest area of concentration—due to increasing religious hostility in the military. Liberty Institute is dedicated to preserving the religious freedom of those who are willing to sacrifice everything for ours.
- Throughout the Public Arena —Efforts are increasing to remove any references to God from public property and to discriminate against those who speak out about their faith and operate their businesses in a way that is consistent with their faith. Liberty Institute is working to make sure that religious liberty is cherished and protected in the public square.

This report, put together each year by Liberty Institute, chronicles instances where religious liberty has been threatened in each of these four areas. The 2013 edition includes over 1,200 documented incidents of religious hostility, approximately double the number from 2012. Though religious hostility in our nation is increasing, Liberty Institute is committed to working to protect the free exercise of religion for Americans, not only in the present, but also for generations to come.
